min/km ↔ min/mile

Convert min/km and min/mile with the international mile 1.609344 km. Why 5:00/km is 8:03/mi, not 8:00, and how a 400 m split becomes a pace.

min/mile = min/km × 1.609344. 5:00/km is 8:03/mi, not 8:00. Using 1.6 instead of 1.609344 drifts about 3 seconds per mile — several minutes in a marathon.

US plans are often miles; most certified road races outside the US mark kilometres. You only need one factor: the international mile is exactly 1.609344 km (NIST). Everything else is multiply or divide, then round the display to a second.

The conversions

min/mile = min/km × 1.609344
min/km = min/mile ÷ 1.609344

The pace converter also accepts km/h, mph and a 400 m split. Same arithmetic as this page.

Worked values (match the converter)

min/kmmin/mileWhy
5:008:035 × 1.609344 = 8.04672 min → 8:03
5:308:515.5 × 1.609344 = 8.8514 min → 8:51

5:419:094:00 marathon / 2:00 half

Reverse: 8:03/mi ÷ 1.609344 ≈ 5.00 min/km. Entering 8:03/mi in the converter lands on 5:00/km within a rounding second.

Do not use 1.6

5:00 × 1.6 = 8:00/mi. The true value is 8:03. Three seconds per mile × 26.2 ≈ 80 seconds on a marathon — enough to miss a goal or a cutoff sketch. 1.61 is closer; 1.609344 is the definition.

Track: 400 m to pace

A 400 m lap is 0.4 km. Pace min/km = lap minutes ÷ 0.4. A 2:12 lap is 2.2 / 0.4 = 5:30/km (8:51/mi). Four even laps are 5:30/km on a 1600 m, which is a shade short of a mile (1609.344 m).

Print both units

If your group mixes km watches and mile plans, generate one pace chart with both columns instead of converting in your head at km 18. Definition of pace: what is running pace. Inverse in km/h: pace vs speed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why 8:03 and not 8:02 or 8:04?

8.04672 minutes is 8 minutes + 0.04672×60 ≈ 2.8 seconds, which rounds to 8:03.

Is a statute mile the same as a nautical mile?

No. Running uses the international statute mile, 1609.344 m. Do not use 1852 m.

Can I convert a whole race time this way?

Yes for even pace: multiply or divide the per-unit pace, then multiply by distance. The pace calculator does both columns at once.

What about min/km to mph?

First invert to km/h (60 ÷ min/km), then divide by 1.609344. 5:00/km → 12.00 km/h → 7.46 mph.
