Pace vs Speed

Pace is minutes per kilometre or mile. Speed is kilometres or miles per hour. Same run, inverse units — and the converter uses the same numbers as this page.

Pace = time ÷ distance. Speed = distance ÷ time. 5:00/km is exactly 12.00 km/h (7.46 mph). km/h = 60 ÷ min/km. Use pace on the road; treadmills and ACSM talk speed.

A watch can show 5:00/km or 12.00 km/h for the same stride. They are not two fitness scores. One is time per unit of distance; the other is distance per unit of time. Flip either and you get the other.

The two formulas

pace (min/km)  = 60 / speed (km/h)
speed (km/h)   = 60 / pace (min/km)
mph            = km/h ÷ 1.609344

The pace converter implements those identities. Display rounding is to a whole second for pace and two decimals for speed — same as methodology.

Same numbers as the converter

Pacemin/milekm/hmph
5:00/km8:0312.007.46
5:30/km8:5110.916.78
6:00/km9:3910.006.21

Entering 12 km/h returns 5:00/km. Entering 7.46 mph is the same run within a rounding tick. A 400 m in 2:12 is 5:30/km because 2.2 min / 0.4 km = 5.5.

When to read pace

Road markers are distances. “What should the clock say at km 10?” is a pace question. Race plans, even splits and wristbands are all pace. See what pace is if you still want the definition from time and distance.

When to read speed

Treadmills, bike computers and the ACSM calorie equation speak metres per minute or km/h. Indoor 10 km/h at 0% is 6:00/km; adding grade changes cost, not the belt’s displayed speed. Convert with the treadmill converter when you care about outdoor-equivalent pace.

Do not mix them mid-session

If the watch is in km/h and the plan is in min/mile, convert once before you start. Mixing “I felt like 11 km/h then 5:20/km” is how people double-count effort. The printable pace chart prints both families on one grid.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is faster pace a higher or lower number?

Lower. 4:30/km is faster than 5:00/km. Speed goes the other way: 13 km/h is faster than 12 km/h.

Why 60 in the formula?

There are 60 minutes in an hour. 60 ÷ 5 min/km = 12 km in one hour.

Does 8:03/mi equal 5:00/km exactly?

5:00 × 1.609344 = 8.04672 min = 8:03 after display rounding. Internally they invert.

Which should my treadmill use?

Match the console. Convert to min/km if your outdoor plan is written that way. Grade is a separate conversion.
