Stress score is the metric people misunderstand most, because it is not measuring how busy you are. It is measuring what your autonomic nervous system is doing, inferred from the variation between your heartbeats while you are still.
Less variability means higher stress. More variability means lower stress. That is why a hard workday with no movement at all can push the number as high as a tempo run.
What it actually measures
While you are inactive, your watch analyses heart rate variability to estimate your stress on a 0–100 scale. Training, physical activity, sleep, nutrition and general life stress all influence it. Garmin recommends wearing the watch while sleeping for the most reliable results.
Value bands
| Value | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 76–100 | High stress Your nervous system is in fight-or-flight mode. Often work pressure, poor sleep, caffeine or alcohol rather than training. | Garmin’s guidance applies here: stand up and walk, close your eyes and breathe, or stop and listen to music. Not the moment for a hard session. |
| 51–75 | Medium stress Elevated but manageable — the ordinary background level of a demanding day. | Easy miles are fine. Watch whether the number clears afterwards. |
| 26–50 | Low stress Normal daytime baseline for most people. | Nothing to act on. This is where a working day should sit. |
| 0–25 | Resting Genuinely relaxed or asleep — the blue bars on your stress graph. | This is recovery, not laziness. You should see a solid block of it overnight. |
Garmin’s own bands: 0–25 resting, 26–50 low stress, 51–75 medium stress, 76–100 high stress.
How to improve it — three steps
- Wear it overnight — Garmin is explicit: for best results, wear the watch while sleeping. Daytime stress is judged against the night that preceded it.
- Count all-day stress as training load — It drains Body Battery exactly like a run does. If your average stress is high, easy weeks are not optional — they are the fix.
- Use the breathing timer when it spikes — A two to five minute breathing session measurably drops the number and is the fastest lever you have during a working day.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a normal Garmin stress score?
Most of the day should sit between 0 and 50. Sustained time above 75 is the signal to back off.
Why is my stress high when I am just sitting?
The metric is based on heart rate variability, not movement. Work stress, caffeine, alcohol and poor sleep all raise it while you are stationary.
Is stress score the same as the HRV stress test?
No. The all-day stress widget uses wrist heart rate. The HRV Stress Test app requires a chest strap and a three-minute standing measurement, and reports a different number.
